Scottsdale Community College will host the annual “Alli Ortega Empty Bowls 2016” fundraiser to fight hunger Wednesday, November 30, 2016, in the school cafeteria.
The community event, which is free and open to the public, sells handmade ceramic bowls and provides a modest meal for $10. Proceeds go to Vista del Camino Social Services, a City of Scottsdale agency which offers emergency food, clothing and shelter to city residents.
Started in 1990, Empty Bowls has grown into an international grassroots movement to battle hunger. The Alli Ortega Empty Bowls event is presented through a partnership of Scottsdale Unified School District, City of Scottsdale agencies and SCC.
Food will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or as long as quantities last). Ceramic bowls will be sold until 6 p.m.
The bowls are made by middle-school and high school students in the Scottsdale Unified and Paradise Valley Unified school districts. Other bowls are donated by interested community artisans.
A meal of pasta or soup will be prepared by students in the SCC Culinary Department, and sponsored by the Center for Civic and Global Engagement.
The event was renamed last year to commemorate the late Alli Ortega, a local artist, City of Scottsdale employee and loyal Empty Bowls volunteer, who passed away in 2014.
SCC President Jan Gehler and Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane will offer welcoming remarks. A short program will follow.
